Alphabet

The longest journey begins with a single step.
When you read a Japanese document, probably you will find letters like below [tab. 2 - 1,2,3] in it.
[tab. 2-1] Alphabet

These are 2byte hi-ra-ga-na.
2byte hi-ra-ga-na make it easier for Japanese people to read,
because sentences written in 2byte, say
"", costs less letters than
sentences written in 1byte,
"ko-nn-ni-chi-wa", as you see.
1byte hi-ra-ga-na may be called "Roman Japanese"
in order to distinguish from 2byte hi-ra-ga-na.
But you need not to use 2byte hi-ra-ga-na. Most of Japanese people who use computers can write roman Japanese. So they will talk to you in roman Japanese, if you ask them.
